A Quiet Night at First Encounter

Matt and I joined forces for a third outreach event, this time at First Encounter Beach in Eastham. In past summers I’ve had large crowds for much of the night here. It’s a stunning place to watch the sun set, so besides people leaving the beach at the end of the day, there are many arriving for sunset.

But this night the parking lot emptied quickly, and we had only a handful of interested people stick around to look through our telescopes. Matt showed off some lovely deep-sky objects (galaxies, globular clusters and the like) while I, with my smaller telescope not well-suited to such targets, kept it pointed at Saturn, which it’s ideal for.
