Carpe Noctem

The weather on Cape Cod, especially the outer Cape, is capricious. A clear sunny afternoon can transform into heavy overcast by sunset. A strong ocean breeze can cause the telescope to shake, the motion invisible to the eye, but causing a hopelessly unstable image at 75x magnification. So I felt lucky to have two good nights for observing these past two weeks.

I’m accustomed to observing through the heavy light pollution of Manhattan. On the outer Cape, far from city lights, Jupiter and Saturn were wonderfully sharp and detailed. I was glad to be able to share them with family and strangers alike.
