80mm of Fun

My main telescope rig is in Massachusetts but I’m in New York. (Long story.) So with a clear sky and well-positioned first quarter moon, it was time to field-test the new mini-rig.

It’s something I’ve been slowly assembling over the past year or so: an 80mm refractor (as opposed to my 100mm) with a smaller mount and tripod. Total weight is about 25 pounds, requiring just a photo backpack, case for the mount, and tripod bag. The main rig is about 75 pounds, with several cases and requiring a special cart for transport.

I was able to get a good photo of the Moon through the eyepiece — never an easy thing to do. And many people stopped by to look at the Moon and Saturn.
